Mom Defends 16-Year-Old Son After Her Killed His 14-Year-Old Sister “They Had A Beautiful Relationship”

Police are saying that one person was killed in an accidental shooting on Monday.

Relatives identified the victim as a 14-year-old Kahmyah Robertson.

Just before 2 p.m. police received a call about a baby who wasn’t breathing. Officers responded to the call near Elwood Street and E Hume Avenue. When they arrived, they found a victim with a gunshot wound to the chest.

There was no sign of a baby being there.

“She is 14 years old,” said Robertson’s grandmother, Janice McBride. “Her brother might have been involved and it might have been an accident.” McBride stressed that whoever shot her granddaughter most likely “didn’t try to do it intentionally.”

On Tuesday, Jamecia Robertson, Kahmyah’s mother, said that her 16-year-old son accidentally shot the girl. But she is certain that he didn’t mean for the gun to fire.

Marcus Johnson, 16, was in juvenile court on Tuesday. The Muskegon County Prosecutor’s Office was granted a five-day adjournment to decide if Johnson will be charged with open murder in juvenile court or in the adult system.

“I just want him to come home,” said Robertson.

Muskegon Heights Police Chief Joseph E. Thomas Jr. said the victim died at the hospital around 2:30 p.m.

“She was a smart, outgoing person,” remembers cousin Armonie McBride. “She was a very happy little girl. She loved her family. She loved me.”

The girl’s grandmother also said, “Just a beautiful girl.”

Kahmyah was about to enter 9th grade at the Muskegon Heights Academy.

“She was an outgoing person, she was loving. She was a good student,” remembers her mother.

Thomas said the incident is a possible accidental shooting. He said that accidental discharging of firearms are the cause of at least half of the Muskegon Heights homicides in the past 18 months.

Muskegon’s prosecutor filed three charges related to accidental shootings recently.

In July, 70-year-old Otha Wade accidentally shot and killed his girlfriend. He’s going to trial on a manslaughter charge.

In December, 18-year-old James McBride accidentally shot and killed his friend Keazion Pace. McBride is now serving a prison sentence.

And in May of last year Dareese Hewlett Jr. accidentally shot his brother Davion. Dareese pleaded guilty, and served a 90-day jail sentence.

“And now you got a brother and sister, and that is extremely disturbing even to police officer and to me,” said Thomas.

At this point in the investigation police aren’t releasing information about the gun used in this latest accidental shooting death.

But the Muskegon Heights Police Chief encourages community members to help police keep guns away from kids, or adults who don’t legally own them. Any unregistered or illegally possessed guns can’t be turn over to police.

“And give us a phone call, let us know that you are coming, and just give it to us, no questions asked,” said Thomas.

Marcus Johnson’s next court date is scheduled for Monday. His attorney will be asking the court to allow him to attend his sister’s funeral on Tuesday.
