Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick will be released from prison after serving seven years of a 28-year sentence for his role in a major corruption scandal after President Donald Trump commuted his sentence late Tuesday night.
On his way out of the White House door, President Donald Trump commuted the sentence of Kwame Kilpatrick, freeing him 20 years early for public corruption crimes he was convicted of in 2013.
Trump — who like Kilpatrick left office in disgrace, impeached twice during his four-year term — included Kilpatrick on his clemency list, setting him free, when no one else would. Since his conviction, Kilpatrick had lost all appeals. The U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear his case. He sought a commutation from President Barack Obama, but it was denied.
In the end, it was Trump who came through for Kilpatrick — a lifelong Democrat who in 2019 wrote Trump a letter praising him and congratulating him on his “unprecedented success” in office.
WOW! This is impressive on both behalf’s. Kwame for having enough sense to write the letter. Even while he was down he was still playing CHESS not checkers. I remember when Kwame was imprisoned. He really did no more than any other politician. He definitely didn’t deserve such a harsh sentence.
As to Trump setting him free, when NO ONE ELSE WOULD, this says a lot about the realness of Donald Trump.
That’s all I will say. Feel free to argue in the comments.
Just remember that not even OBAMA pardoned Kwame.
