BATON ROUGE, Louisiana — Former LSU wide receiver Kyren Lacy, 24, has died in what sources report as a suspected suicide, according to WBRZ in Baton Rouge. His passing comes just days before he was scheduled to appear in court on charges related to a 2024 car crash that claimed the life of a 78-year-old man.
Lacy was facing charges of negligent homicide, hit-and-run, and reckless operation stemming from a crash that occurred in Lafourche Parish. Louisiana State Police said Lacy was driving a 2023 Dodge Charger south on LA Highway 20 when he illegally crossed a no-passing zone at high speed, attempting to pass several vehicles.
As Lacy’s vehicle entered the northbound lane, a pickup truck driver swerved to avoid a head-on collision. A 2017 Kia Cadenza following the truck also veered to avoid the oncoming Charger, crossing into the southbound lane and colliding head-on with a 2017 Kia Sorento.
Herman Hall, 78, of Thibodaux, was a passenger in the Sorento and later died from injuries sustained in the crash. Authorities said Lacy fled the scene without stopping to provide assistance or report the incident.
He was later arrested and booked into the Lafourche Parish jail, where he spent less than two hours in custody before being released. A grand jury was scheduled to review the case on Monday.
Lacy had recently completed his senior season at LSU, where he recorded a career-high 58 receptions for 866 yards and nine touchdowns. He transferred to LSU after starting his college football career at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Just two days after the crash, Lacy announced his intention to enter the 2025 NFL Draft.
Troop C was later notified that Hall, who was a passenger in the Kia Sorrento, succumbed to his injuries from the crash after being transported to a hospital for treatment.
Lacy was booked on charges of negligent homicide, hit-and-run, and reckless operation and spent less than two hours in the Lafourche Parish jail.
He played three seasons of college football at LSU after transferring from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
He obviously chose to end his life than to risk going to prison for decades….
